Previous links and comments from this OP removed since it's now officially available.

No, it's at 3.0 RC4 right now.

See here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=942645) for openoffice.org links. But it isn't officially final yet, I don't think they will make the announcement until they have the debs/rpms/whatever built.

Offically, yes. But the stable version IS available right now in the link I provided.

Thanks, so were the links I posted bogus or are these simply unofficial finals (unofficial in the sense of quiet release unless any serious bugs are found) or RC pushed falsely as final?

The Linux screenshot is dated October 22, 2001.

If I am not mistaking, it is coming out, at the 13th this month, the 8th birthday of OO.O

Perhaps, but the download isn't. Many sites use old screenshots, especially those with user contributed content (not sure if the site I linked to does that), but the download itself is dated Oct 9, 2008, has anyone tried the downloads and checked the downloaded binaries themselves?

That's what I was led to believe as well, which is why it surprised me to see the final posted, which may or may not be the actual final, so I thought I'd ask here.

It doesn't make any sense to provide a download to the newest version of a program, and then show a screenshot of a very old version.

This download is supposed to be for OpenOffice 3.0.0.

If the date on the screenshot is correct, then the version displayed on the screenshot is Build 638c. OpenOffice 1.0 wasn't even released until May 1, 2002, almost seven months later.

No, it doesn't make any sense, in my opinion, and that's not how I would run a site hosting software.

However, this is often done on many sites which contain a lot of software.

Screenshot aside, I ask again: has anyone downloaded the binaries and tested them to see whether or not this is a final version or not? My post was about the files, not the screenshot! :P

I can't speak for the links in this thread, but OO.o3 is availble.

It just hasn't been announced (and it will be on the 13th).

I guess they expect a massive amount of downloading and are using the weekend to get the mirrors ready.

Other FOSS projects essentially do the same (even Ubuntu). The final is ready, even available, for a few days before it's offically released.

Thanks for the post, RS3York. I didn't test the binaries I linked to in this speculative thread, but I did hear some people saying elsewhere the "Final" binaries floating around were RC4, and may or may not be the final, depending on whether or not there will be an RC5, but I don't have an official declaration to point to, so this is just my muttering. I'll wait until the OpenOffice site makes an announcement officially before downloading anything.

I'm using version 3.0.0 here. It's so much better than 2.4.

In what way? I need primarily better handling of bullet points and formatting from Word 200x documents....

It appears OpenOffice 3 Final is indeed out and available for download?:

http://tech.slashdot.org/tech/08/10/11/227236.shtml

As maj_id10t notes, though the OO.o site does not yet carry an announcement, "Lifehacker has posted an entry stating the final release of OpenOffice 3.0 is available for download via their distribution mirrors."

http://lifehacker.com/5061691/openofficeorg-30-final-on-a-server-near-you
http://distribution.openoffice.org/mirrors/#extmirrors
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/3.0/
http://development.openoffice.org/releases/3.0.0.html

So, I wonder if the links I first posted in my OP were the same as what's being offered now "via their distribution mirrors"?

Will this release be included in the next ubuntu version, or is it to late for that?

I installed it a few hours ago.

It crashed when I opened any new documents :(
The issue was solved by getting rid of the settings directory in $HOME
mv .openoffice.org openoffice.org.bak
# I used mv just in case I need it again

It seems to load faster than OOo2 and Calc looks nicer (select cells is no longer black but a transparent blue). The only problems so far is integration into Ubuntu with things like the menus and file associations being a problem.

Anyone know when will the Ubuntu backports be available?

I also installed the PDF Import addon. Works great for anything that's not from a PDF printer (whatever one my uni uses at least) otherwise it's slow to import (10 min +) and every character is it's own textbox. The hybrid support worked well though.

As a user pointed out in a separate thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=946247), OpenOffice 3 has been officially released. I thought I'd add this post here to close up this speculative thread.
