Forgive me for being so new that I lost track of my original question and also of the answer, thereby being unable to thank that person by name. I failed to mention that I have also lost the bottom panel, Due to the answer I received, I discovered that by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop, I get the accessibility menu. So I can get around some, but still have no top or bottom edge panels, and have no normal right click options. Any other suggestions. (And, by the way, do I want xfce managing my desktop?)

Many thanks for your consideration.

try pressing the alt-f2 keys...see if it brings up a run dialog box.

if it does, type the following into it:

xfce4-panel &

that should give you the top panel. if no bottom panel appears...right click somewhere in an empty spot of the top panel and choose "new panel".

hope that helps.

What happened exactly? How did you loose the panels?
