USB Drive Question

I am new to Ubuntu 8.0.4. My question is this: "Does the unmount selection power off the usb device?" If it does not, it is an unsafe operation and I don't want to do that. Perhaps I am missing something and there is a way to activate a Safe Remove indication somewhere?

Several searches haven't turned up anything on this.

No, unmounting a device will not power it down, but it will make it safe to remove the device; it works the same way in Windows, so I don't understand why you think it would be unsafe. What USB device are you specifically concerned about?
