How to install a previous version of Gnome

Hi, I am running across a situation not solved by Brazilian forums so I would like to try this English forum.

I am Ubuntu user for over the last 3 years and for web design issues I always used dual boot. But now, I am just a web programmer so I am running Ubuntu alone on my computer and for that reason I reinstalled Ubuntu on the entire HD.

I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 8.04 and then after Update the Gnome Display Manager didn't work for me anymore!

So I tried to undo the update but I don't have great knowlegde of how to deal with packages like I see most guys do.

In fact, every time I run anything related to gnome it triggers this message:

Gnome display manager default configuration have not been correcty installed.

But, I just upgrade the system.

So I installed Ubuntu 7.10 and then everything ran perfectly,
nonetheless I updated the system and on Ubuntu 7.10 I still had the same problem.

I figured out that this could be related to the newest version of gdm
so I would like to fix this installing a previous version of gnome.

How do I proceed this?

Nobody able to help me?
I don't believe it!
I've posted the same problem in my country forum and got no answer.
If you search google you can't find a simple answer :S
How to install a previous version of Gnome?
I am very disapointed,
I am with such a terrible look on my desktop
because I can't manage anything with gnome,
then I prefer to jump to die from some high place then
work on that terrible desktop.

That's okay now!
I installed my Windows XP again,
and now I have a beautifull desktop again!
I so sorry, I couldn't even find a guy in my city
to fix my problem :S
Is it so hard to install a previous version of gnome?
