Hi,

I'm using kubuntu 8.10 and i can't create folders, add icons etc on my desktop.
Using kde4.1.
Is this a bug or just another kde bull...?

Funny thing is, when i've got something on my desktop i cant see it until i go to /home/me/Desktop.

What to do?

I know, but that's bull$hit..
I can't use desktop to add icons/and or folders..
damn.
Where's the logic here - there is folder called desktop in user folder. But there is no desktop!

This really irritated me also until I figured it out.

Right-click on your plasma-desktop and select:

Add Widget>Folder View

This will add a folder view of your /home folder with a transparent background. If you then click the wrench (Folder View Settings) you will get the option to create a desktop view. This desktop view behaves just like the old desktop with the ability to create folders and application launchers.

Thanks man, but i already knew that. And it's not quite the same as the old was...
Do you happen to know, how can i make the transparency 100% and set the folder few size 1:1 with my screen size? I think that'll do the trick..:P

As much as i know, the kde 4.1 just is like that.
You can add "folder view" widget, but it's not the same as the "old desktop" was. Try it out, maybe you like it.
The way it is right now has bring up extremely many people who don't like that. So there are rumors that kde team MAY change the desktop look back to default, or at least add the choise to settings.

I've only been playing with KDE 4.1 in Intrepid for a couple of days, but I did notice one way to create an app launch icon on the plasma desktop (not in the desktop folder). I right-clicked on an app in the K menu and selected "add to desktop", and expected to see it show up in the desktop folder view. To my surprise, it appeared as a widget on the plasma desktop instead.

4.2 will have your old desktop again, till that time it's folder view. You can also use opensuse they backported it and there you can select plain desktop. But folder view i find much more handy, it can show only files type i want i can see more folders with content then only a desktop with a folder on it where you need to click to see what is in. Really folder view has more advantage then old desktop ever had.

you can drag shortcuts to folders and application lauchers from kmenu or dolphin after you unlock widgets. And use the folder view widget to show the contents of your desktop. No problem
