I was looking at a HDD on newegg, and was this *pinches fingers together* close to buying it, when i thought about what you (community) thought about it... will it work in linux?

im planning on formating it to ext3, so file system doesn't count.

It should be fine. Whatever bundled backup software that comes with it will likely be Windows only though.

I have a mybook 500 Gig that I formatted to ext3 with no problems. Since external hard drives rely on USB or Firewire for communication, it will work as long as you have the right port on your computer. Plus, Ubuntu simply rocks at recognizing file systems. :)

Yes it will work. I have a 500GB WD MyBook (formatted to ext3) and it works fine.

If your pc/laptop supports Firewire/eSATA I would suggest getting an external drive with these interface as USB is really slow.

Sure it will work.

However reading the title made me laugh.

You're a native speaker so it's actually worse.

never had a harddrive not work, wd seagate maxtor hitatchi samsung and prolly a couple others and not one has been like "pffft linux? u53'5 4 hax0r?" and not worked. now i would say some are more reliable than others after that but wd is always nice, and i have to say thats a pretty awesome deal for a 2.5hd in case, but i dont need one atm

i noticed that it should have been "will..." the second i hit the submit button. but i hit the submit button prematurely, and it was stuck that way.

originally the title was going to be: is ubuntu going to work with this hdd? or something

but that didn't sound right.

Its a network space hdd so I can plug it into my router and then share it to my various ubuntu and windows desktops and laptops.
Has anyone used it before or know if its compatible? I bought an all in one printer that I still havent got to work in ubuntu so dont wanna get burned twice
