i'm doubting about a network drive too, and this one is very cheep here!!
or should i buy a wd my book world?

If you follow the link and download the manual it mentions linux in the minimum system requirements section on page 6. It says you need linux 2.4 and a web browser, but that is the only mention of linux in the whole manual.

I bought this and it is fully compatible with Ubuntu. I have it to automount on startup and works no problem

And it should. From the manual at http://www.lacie.com/download/manual/networkspace_en.pdf:
"The LaCie Network Space is compatible with Mac®, Windows® and Linux machines"
You can even hook up an ext3 formatted drive to its usb port.
I'm getting one tomorrow. :-)

At its website (http://www.lacie.com/uk/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10117) Lacie says that the Linux version of its Ethernet Agent application is still under development, and it cannot be downloaded. But most configuration is done via a web browser, so no real problem here.
From the manual I get that there are only two accounts on the file server of the device, "Administrator" and "user", and that rights cannot be managed in a very advanced way. There is "MyShare", which can only be accessed by the admin and there is the public share that can be accessed by everyone on the LAN through SMB and by the user via FTP.

I got mine now and it works fine with my Debian Lenny. I did not need the Lacie Ethernet Agent, a web browser is sufficient to configure the Network Space. From its log file I see that the device is operated by a Linux OS.

Glad I found this thread, I am planning to buy the Lacie Network Space 1TB and was wondering if it run nicely with Ubuntu.
Any tips on getting started from your experiences?
Also, how do the speeds far when accessing it through wifi?

How did you guys connect from Ubuntu to your lacie drives?
For some reason, if I choose FTP (with logon) the folders appear empty even though I have files in them.

With a bit of trial and error and piecing things together from threads here I got it working to my satisfaction.
Create a folder in /media then add this line to fstab:
//192.168.1.64/openshare/ media/NetworkSpace cifs 0 0
Change the address to whatever it is, and whatever you called the folder in /media. It now automounts on to my desktop after my wireless connection has logged on. I originally had my music and videos on another partition of the same hdd so going through a network was initially slower slightly but now it seems the same as it used to be.

Actually, since posting here I got it to work, I downloaded the Linux version of the LaCie Agent, made sure smbfs was also installed, and then simply went to Places > Connect to Server and it worked.

So Lacie got its Network Assistant for Linux finished in the few days since I last checked. It can be used to set the IP address of the Networkspace, or choose for Automatic through DHCP, which is the default. Since my router has DHCP, I do not need the Network Assistant.
Installing the Assistant on my Debian Lenny went easy by just doing "sh LaCie\ Network\ Assistant\ 1.1.package" in a terminal. Then "LaCie_Network_Assistant" and a little clickable icon appeared in the notification area of the Gnome.
It would be cool if some Linux geeks found a way to make the firmware better, so that we can have more user accounts with different permissions and direct hook up as a usb mass storage device to a PC.

I have just installed this on Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala.
I Inserted the disk that came with the drive and navigated to the Linux folder on the CD. Double clicked on the lna-linux-1.1.rar Folder and copied the LaCie Network Assistant 1.1 by dragging it to my desktop. I then double clicked on the Readme.txt file in the /media/CD_Utilities /Linux/lna-linux-1.1.rar Folder and read the following.

Please read these instructions about LaCie Network Assistant 1.1 for linux.
The software was tested on ubuntu 8.04, mandriva, and Suze, 32bits version.
--Installation--
To install LaCie Network Assistant, just double click on the .package file. I HAD TO DO THIS NEXT STEP You might need to check the file has execution permissions. If not, right click on the file, choose "properties", in the "permissions" settings check "allow executing file as program".
Upon opening the .package, if the autopackage tools are not installed in your system, the installer will automatically offer you to install it.
--Configuration--
1/ If you have a 64bits system, you will need the Avahi libraries for 32bits.
2/ Mandriva and suze automatically close ports for Avahi. The application can be launched but it does not list devices on your network. In this case you should open the right port for avahi (UDP 5353). We do not advise you to deactivate your firewall.
3/ If you cannot mount volumes, make sure you have "smbfs" installed.

I feel really proud of myself as I am a novice and am still finding my way around Ubuntu. My goal is to have all my hardware and software applications (or their alternatives) replicated on the Ubuntu platform. Last night it was my Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner, tonight the NAS, and tomorrow night, ah yes Spanish lessons. lol.

Sorry my english is very bad.
- I add in fstab this two line :

- I add the directory /media/LaCie_1T
But it dosen' t work
Can you explain me were is my mistake ?

Still works with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010 and supported until April 2013.

Hello,
I just finished the installation of the LaCie Network assistant. All look fine, but, when I going to click on the blue Lacie logo on the tool bar, to have access to my two Drive "Open Share " and "My Share", I cannot see them as in Win7 or Mac OSX. To have access to thr both Folders, I have to go to the Ubuntu Control tool bar/Shortcut/Network and the I see twice 2 Network links "NetworkSpace2" and "NETWORKSPACE2".
Any idea to have a better and simple access to my folders ?

Hi, I gave up on the LaCie NetworkSpace a year ago. The firmware and control panel are/were painfully primitive and limiting.
I took the HDD out of the enclosure and turned it into a USB hdd. I attached it to my spare Ubuntu laptop, and am now using it as a networked drive and have set up my own DLNA server, as well as TimeMachine backup device, I can also connect to my shared content using AFP from the Macs.

I wanted to mount the OpenShare partition so I installed smbfs (it's use is apparently depreciated so someone might want to correct me here), then added the following line to /etc/fstab
//192.168.local.ip/OpenShare/ /mount/point cifs users,auto,credentials=/path/to/credentials/file,noexec,noperm 0 0
and created a credentials file in the location given by /path/to/credentials/file containing the lines
user = USERNAME
password = PASSWORD
with read only permissions (400) by the owner (me) as well as ownership of the file
chmod 400 /path/to/credentials/file
chown USERNAME.USERNAME /path/to/credentials/file
and voilą, the partion automounted on the next restart!
Basically, I did the same as is detailed in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=283131 except for the part about ownership of the credentials file. I tried root.root ownership but this meant that the partition could only be mounted by root and henceforth had root ownership (i.e. all file operations had to be preceeded by "sudo").

Just to confirm that it is fully compatible with my system. LaCie have developped their Network Assistant for linux and managed to have it operational on 64bits system like mine.
=> So this product is a good choice for linux users !
