hi all

scanned some threads and didnt find this specific issue...

installed ubuntu ultimate last night from winxp, installed as a 10gb without a partition (shows up in add/remove in windows)

boots fine, login in fine.... run an application and the screen switches off. any application at all. it's well annoying cause otherwise ubuntu looks and sounds gorgeous heh

any clues at all?

ps - yup, total n00b..... apologies for this, been a hard working ms techie for years but frankly everything since win and office 2k/xp has both sucked and blown.... time for fresh tech....

:lolflag:

What do you mean when you say that the screen switches off? Does the monitor physically shut off, or does the screen just go blank? If you press control-alt-backspace (this is supposed to refresh your graphical server), what happens? Also, what is the exact model of your video card, and if it's an nvidia or ATI device, did you install the closed-source drivers for it?

You may also want to try burning an Ubuntu live CD and booting to it just to see if the problems occurs there as well (booting to the live CD won't cause any changes to your Windows or Ubuntu installations on your hard drive).
