Release parties are normally install parties, not eating and drinking.

When 8.10 comes out, I will celebrate by getting the torrent and waiting for it to be burned. However, I'd likely install it on my laptop first, to give the desktop seeding time to at least 1:1

I like Ubuntu just as much like the next user here, but I would never go to such a thing.

Don't know, it sounds too nerdy for me.

I'll probably go for a bike ride and drink some green tea. Wait, I do that every day :)

Our LoCo's release parties are the opposite. We have eating and drinking (and socializing) parties. I asked once about installing the latest Ubuntu at the party, and was told that Ubuntu was so easy to install, that really wasn't necessary, although if someone wanted/needed help, they would get it.

Fear of appearing nerdy can cramp your style, for sure. I'd go to an intrepid release party if there was one near me.

What the heck, I don't care who thinks I'm a nerd.:lolflag:

By saying it sounds to nerdy for me I basically said nobody will ever see me near one of those things.

Not because I'm afraid to be there but because I doubt I would like being there.

I would look around, say to myself; "what the hell are you doing here?" and move along.

I think I might see if I can get booked into the dentist and have some teeth pulled out. Ubuntu's great but installing software of any kind is pure tedium, if only because you have to wait for the progress bar to make it's long adventure from 0 to 100%, and then wait 10 more minutes once it gets their.

Rather than speculation, I'd rather hear from someone who has actually been to one of these release parties!

I've been to two of our LoCo's release parties.

The party for Gutsy (7.10) was held at an Irish Pub on the north side of Indianapolis. A couple people brought their laptops and other devices, although we didn't do any installing there. We had supper, sat around and talked about various issues, mostly open source and Linux related, but not entirely.

Our party for Hardy (8.04) was held at the Ft. Benjamin Harrison State Park on the east side of Indianapolis. Again, some people brought their laptops, but it was mainly a pitch-in cookout.

Plans for the Intrepid release party haven't been finalized yet.

Our New Mexico LoCo has a party for each release. Since we also organize separate Install Fests and do something for Software Freedom Day these are primarily social events. For Hardy we put up fliers (at local libraries, coffee shops, etc) inviting the public and got a pretty good turn out. There were 15+ people not previously exposed to Ubuntu who showed up as a result. We did do a demonstration of and brief presentation on Ubuntu, hand out cd's and printed materials and tried to answer any questions our guests had. However, most of the evening was about eating and drinking and a good time was had by all. We are planning a similar event for Intrepid and you are all welcome. Check our wiki page for more info.

Here's a list, although there aren't many on it... yet.

I'm using it now and it's already better than Hardy ever was, so there's no real need for me to anticipate the official release.

See, there's a problem with release/install parties. You're going to meet some people you've never met before in person, and you're bringing a few hundred dollars of equipment with you as well.

"Yeah!"

"Me too!"

In the "old days", Linux had poor hardware-detection and could be a real pita to install. That's why install-fests were born: so gurus could help non-gurus in the great endurance trial called "installing Linux".

Luckily, nowadays installing Linux is not such a feat. Some hardware is still a nightmare - but for most machines, installing involves clicking "OK" a few times. So the original reason for install-fests has gone: what else is there to do other than eat and drink yourself insensible? :)

Maybe i'll post pics from my 8.10 install party. It'll include my laptop, my grill, and a few bottles of a decent brew from a small town in Texas.

I am in Chicago. Do you know of any release parties a little closer to chi-town ? Indy is quite a drive :)

LoCos are supposed to post their release parties on this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseParties

Looks like there are only four scheduled for North America right now, but there may be more scheduled closer to the time of launch.

You might also check with your local LoCo team to see if they are having a party:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamList

It looks like there is a Chicago team:

If you cant make a "real" release party and arent afraid of IRC, #ubuntu-release-party on Freenode is pretty fun.

I'll be celebrating by seeding the torrent on my shiny new VPS's, then going to sleep and seeing how much bandwidth has been wasted overnight!
