* Debian
* Zenwalk
* VectorLinux
Or any other lightweight linux distribution (http://lightlinux.blogspot.com/2008/06/top-10-of-lightweight-linux_24.html).
At the moment I use Xubuntu on a 1 GHz Pentium with 256 MB RAM. Runs fine (see my review (http://lightlinux.blogspot.com/2008/09/xubuntu-8041-on-hp-evectra.html)), though I decided to change from the default XFCE desktop to the lighter OpenBox. What's wrong with Xubuntu?

Puppy linux is a good start off point. My favourate is TEENpup 2008.
Ubuntu will run well with about double the RAM that you have.
