View Full Version : Any news on that new compiz-ish login screen?

Sometime shortly after 8.04 came out, there was talk of what "will be" in 8.10 many months down the road. There was word that there might be a new login screen (after the boot splash) would debut and use compiz as a platform for animating elements (like a users avatar and login name, roll-over effects, etc). I'm guessing (since I've not seen anything in the most recent "Here's what's really in 8.10" blog entries and news stories) that this isn't going to be in 8.10. I might be wrong (and it would actually be cool if I were wrong). I'm just curious about whether or not this is still in the works.

Haven't heard anything, but it desperately needs to be done. I don't particularly like the way compiz loads after the rest of the desktop - it leads to a Windows style 'you can see it but you can't use it' issue. I would happily sacrifice a slightly longer wait for the login screen to appear if it meant a smoother transition to the desktop.

It's not compiz based, it's cairo based, but yes it has nice effects, but most likely won't be in 8.10 because it is still in heavy development.
Look at this post on mailing list (under login-experience/gdm-face-browser)

Something will definitely be done about it in Gnome 3.0, You can read it here http://www.bomahy.nl/hylke/wip/gnome-art-roadmap-draft.png
I don't think it's Cairo either. It uses Clutter.

Yeah, thanks for the correction, I meant Clutter not Cairo :)
