I just did an install on an older computer, twice, and both times the OS boots up fine but once I log on the screen goes black with the mouse cursor being the only thing on it. The mouse cursor responds with no problem and neither alt-f# or ctrl-alt-f# work.
I've searched for this problem but have only found issues where the console gets loaded, or so it seems.
The most notable issue seems to be that trying to bring up the console doesn't work.
