Evans Blue - an alternative metal/rock band that has a similar sound to A Perfect Circle and Chevelle. I highly recommend their songs "Over" and "Cold."

The Birthday Massacre - an interesting synth rock band. My recommendation: "Looking Glass."

The Benjamin Gate - a now defunct alternative Christian rock band from South Africa. I recommend "Overkill," "Rush," and "Scream."

Dolores O'Riordan - If you remember The Cranberries, Dolores O'Riordan is the former frontwoman of that band and has a really good solo album. My recommendation: "October" and "The Garden."

Plumb - a Contemporary Christian singer, Plumb has some great songs like "Better," "I Can't Do This" and "Manic".

Both Henry and Fred are very accomplished players, this music is a little unusual. Henry is also a uber computer geek, and has designed programs for very important applications which I can't mention. Henry can also play 4 different time signature with all 4 limbs at once, and once was the lead researcher for a bigfoot search group in the Pacific NW.

Tommy Dorsey - 1930's Jazz musician who unfortunately died of the weirdest of deaths--by choking in his sleep. My favorites include "Stomp it Off" and "Chicago".

The Polysics - Crazy Japanese Punk-Pop inspired by Devo for people armed with a speedster and charged with way too much coffee and sugar. Favorites include "Peach Pie on the Beach", "XCT" and "New Wave Jacket".

Emilie Autumn - Anarchy violinist from America blending the styles of Industrial and classical music, sounding like a Victorian mad-woman screaming from her cell. Likings include "Liar", "Dead is the New Alive", "I Know Where You Sleep", "Dominant" and "306".

It's not an issue of whether or not Evanescence is better than some bands (in many cases, it's not), it's that Evanescence's music covers a lot of different genres. So if you were to compare a band's music to Evanescence, you'd have to compare it to one of Evanescence's songs.

GODS I love Flobots. I wouldn't say they're exactly of the 'unknown' status anymore, since the few times I listen to the radio they pop up fairly often. Handlebars (especially while watching the video) makes me weep like you wouldn't believe. And We Are Winning is a wonderfully motivating track.

While it's hardly unknown, Dethklok's Dethalbum (as based on the Metalocalypse cartoon on Cartoon Network) is a favorite of mine. Hilarious, over-the-top death metal.

The Birthday Massacre is definitely a HUGE fave, one of my top picks. Gothic with a little synth background and a sexy singer, not to mention wonderfully dark and emotional lyrics.

Garbage (I know, they're not unheard of either, but they are a little in the background) is fantastic. Numerous songs with gender-bending themes, and a range of sound from industrial-lite to practically pop. And let's not forget the fact that Shirley Manson quickens my pulse a bit too much.

EDIT: How could I forget? I'd say at least the majority of us are Ubuntu users...check out Jamendo and Magnatune to locate some free music. Rhythmbox even supports integration with both of those services ^_^

Guns N' Roses is hard rock/ sleaze rock (I listen to tons of hair metal and gnr are NOT hair metal)

If you are looking for bands similar to ac/dc have you checked out airbourne? very similar to ac/dc you would like them. You should try out using sites like last.fm and pandora to find similar music to artists you like. Pretty much all of my more obscure music I discovered using those.

You should also check out slash's snakepit, slash is the guitarist (obviously) it's a bit different from gnr but there are really good.

I think the Use Your illusion album is very under appreciated too. Some great stuff, coma is my absolute favorite gnr song.

I'm not really digging Chinese democracy so far though.. so far I like Shacklers revenge and chinese democracy but the others seem "meh"

Toby Driver's (the main guy in Kayo Dot) mom was my latin teacher for four years. That and his music is pretty awesome. You should check out Maudlin of the Well, if you can find any of their stuff, anywhere. It's his band before Kayo Dot.

That's someone's own fault for rejecting an entire genre of music. Genre's, in my view are a good thing. They help me find new bands when I'm looking for, and give me a general idea of what something's going to sound like before I check them out. I find most people reject genre's because they're offended because somebody corrected them (not directing that at you).

Some music makes about 75% of some sub cultures like Punk,Emo,Metalhead(well... 100% for metalhead lol),and many others.

My main point is music gernes ever since the 80's have made their mark on people.(or should I say with people?)

So saying omg Disturbed is Heavy Metal would be incorrect as hell and a metalhead would know this.

Or saying The Cockney Rejects is pop would be wrong and look stupid lol. As They are Punk and more or less Hardcore Punk.

Yeah, I see the point, you're right. AC/DC called themselves, or rather their genre, "Power Rock" back in the eighties, I think.

Actually the thing about genres is that when something comes up that you cannot lay your finger on, it's fun to invent a new genre, something unheard-of.

Most of my last.fm (http://www.last.fm/user/PirtePiraja) playlist/profile/favourites consist of "free jazz", and I'm very willing to accept that qualification, because it's a good one.

However, when you rip a cd (with abcde (http://lly.org/~rcw/abcde/page/) for example) you sometimes get funny genres. E.g. "newage" puzzles me: isn't "New Age" some sort of genre of yuppie religion(s)... And Led Zeppelin is often tagged as "folk" (well, yeah, it's as much "folk" as its "heavy metal").

K.M.D. - Kausing Much Damage

Since so many of the kids on here like to have neat and precise labels for everything, you can classify this as underground hip-hop. Whatever you choose to call it, these guys rocked. This is the band that incubated the legendary MF DOOM (Daniel Dumile), if you listen to hip-hop that should be a, "nuff said" moment for you right there.

Check 'em out, you won't regret it. The true brains behind these early productions was the late Subroc, also known as, "The Hip-hop Hendrix" (he was Daniel Dumile's brother.)
