Update: How could I have forgotten Scroobius Pip and the Flobots? Also, added videos

As the title says, what music do you like that not many people have heard of?

Here are a few I can think of:
Cowboy Mouth (really good southern rock) Their most famous single, but not their best song by any means: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQwKdPGkiy0
Ben Folds (though more people know him now than they used to) Great vid, produced by Weird Al: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlGCTWL6djo
The Zutons (British band a lot like the Coral, but more fun IMO) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBXDx5nBWHc
Zox (Its like ska-influenced rock with a violin) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT4lu84DOQw
Prozzak (at least not in the states, they're pretty big in Canada) nothing good on youtube
The Hold Steady (...dunno, you just need to hear them) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Isvn_Dsj2bA
The Flobots (politically active hip-hop with a trumpet and viola) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuK2A1ZqoWs
Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip (British beat poetry/hip-hop-- FANTASTIC):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoN6XfyQsr4

Trip Wamsley - astounding bass player from Louisiana - indie
Jami Sieber - incredible new-age cello - indie
Freddy - fabulous singer-songwriter from Canada - indie
Death and Taxes - great indie rock
Andreas Vollenweider - classical, new-age, rock - well known in some circles, less known amongst squids.

Fireflight - a really good Christian rock band that has a similar sound to Skillet, only it has a female front. I recommend the songs "Unbreakable," "So Help Me God," and "Something New."

Evans Blue - an alternative metal/rock band that has a similar sound to A Perfect Circle and Chevelle. I highly recommend their songs "Over" and "Cold."

The Birthday Massacre - an interesting synth rock band. My recommendation: "Looking Glass."

The Benjamin Gate - a now defunct alternative Christian rock band from South Africa. I recommend "Overkill," "Rush," and "Scream."

Dolores O'Riordan - If you remember The Cranberries, Dolores O'Riordan is the former frontwoman of that band and has a really good solo album. My recommendation: "October" and "The Garden."

Plumb - a Contemporary Christian singer, Plumb has some great songs like "Better," "I Can't Do This" and "Manic".

Caveman Shoe Store and various incarnations of the drummer Henry Franzoni, and Fred Chalenor. Fed currently also plays with slow music a band that has among it's members Robert Fripp leader of King Crimson. This link allows you to check out a lot of the songs of the various groups.

Here is a link to buildabuzz records Henry, and Fred's record distribution website.

Both Henry and Fred are very accomplished players, this music is a little unusual. Henry is also a uber computer geek, and has designed programs for very important applications which I can't mention. Henry can also play 4 different time signature with all 4 limbs at once, and once was the lead researcher for a bigfoot search group in the Pacific NW.

Birthday Massacre - I liked "Happy Birthday", "Broken", "Falling Down", "Goodnight" and "Kill the Lights".

Leftfield - Loudest British group ever. In the same league as Tricky, Massive Attack and Goldfrapp.

Tommy Dorsey - 1930's Jazz musician who unfortunately died of the weirdest of deaths--by choking in his sleep. My favorites include "Stomp it Off" and "Chicago".

The Polysics - Crazy Japanese Punk-Pop inspired by Devo for people armed with a speedster and charged with way too much coffee and sugar. Favorites include "Peach Pie on the Beach", "XCT" and "New Wave Jacket".

Emilie Autumn - Anarchy violinist from America blending the styles of Industrial and classical music, sounding like a Victorian mad-woman screaming from her cell. Likings include "Liar", "Dead is the New Alive", "I Know Where You Sleep", "Dominant" and "306".

All highly recommended to all :)

Blaze Bayley - solo band of former interim Iron Maiden singer, great powerful classic metal

Dallas Crane - great aussie rock

Xavier Rudd - Aussie singer, combining guitar, percussion and didgeridoo, lots of Reggae influence

John Butler Trio - probably not so unknown, perfecting the art of jam session music

I honestly don't think anyone should try to compare another band to Evanescence. It just won't work.

It's not an issue of whether or not Evanescence is better than some bands (in many cases, it's not), it's that Evanescence's music covers a lot of different genres. So if you were to compare a band's music to Evanescence, you'd have to compare it to one of Evanescence's songs.

Yeah, I've heard of a few of the bands here.

The Zutons were featured in MVP Baseball 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MVP_Baseball_2005#Original_soundtrack), Another band featured in this game was The Bravery.
Flowbots were being advertised for on a local radio station in Chicago.
Wolf Mother Have you never played Guitar Hero II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Hero_II)?

Although, I must admit it is a fine line between being rarely heard of and completely obscure.

Some of my choices:
Spoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoon_(band)) Gets some radio play in Chicago
Polyphonic Spree Featured in Eternal Sunshine. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_Sunshine)

Update: How could I have forgotten Scroobius Pip and the Flobots? Also, added videos

GODS I love Flobots. I wouldn't say they're exactly of the 'unknown' status anymore, since the few times I listen to the radio they pop up fairly often. Handlebars (especially while watching the video) makes me weep like you wouldn't believe. And We Are Winning is a wonderfully motivating track.

While it's hardly unknown, Dethklok's Dethalbum (as based on the Metalocalypse cartoon on Cartoon Network) is a favorite of mine. Hilarious, over-the-top death metal.

The Birthday Massacre is definitely a HUGE fave, one of my top picks. Gothic with a little synth background and a sexy singer, not to mention wonderfully dark and emotional lyrics.

Garbage (I know, they're not unheard of either, but they are a little in the background) is fantastic. Numerous songs with gender-bending themes, and a range of sound from industrial-lite to practically pop. And let's not forget the fact that Shirley Manson quickens my pulse a bit too much.

EDIT: How could I forget? I'd say at least the majority of us are Ubuntu users...check out Jamendo and Magnatune to locate some free music. Rhythmbox even supports integration with both of those services ^_^

My favorite bands are Calexico and Flogging Molly. I don't think either is that obscure... though I live in Tucson, where Calexico is based, so that might alter my perspective.

On to more obscure things:
Man Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxv0qhAauAk) - calico / gypsy / eastern european type music.
Devotchka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbZM6ZSlvvY) - similar roots, I guess, but a lot more lyrical and mellow. They did the soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine. I guess they're not that unknown.
Tom Walbank (http://www.myspace.com/tomwalbank) - a British dude who settled in Tucson and plays the most amazing old delta, jook joint blues. It's a shame he is hardly known. One of the best live musicians I've ever witnessed.
Adorable - an 80s British shoegazer band. Their single "Homeboy" is one of my favorite songs.
Frank Klepacki (http://www.frankklepacki.com/) - the guy who scored music for the original Command and Conquer, still the best (imho :)) game soundtrack. And I think he was like 18 at the time.

I will return to this thread when I have more time to check out some of the links!

Iona - Celtic Folk Rock Group

Wolfstone - Band From Skye, also Celtic Rock

Runrig - Celtic Folk Rock

Warmen - Prog Metal group

Sky - Neo-classical Prog Rock from the 70's and 80's. Herbie Flowers, John Williams et al.

The Polyphonic Spree - not sure how to classify this....Gospel? Choir? Alternative?

Space is the Place, indeed. I'm listening to Sun Ra at this very moment — via Last.fm, as a matter of fact, "similar artists to Charles Gayle (http://www.last.fm/listen/artist/Charles%2BGayle/similarartists)". My Last.fm profile (http://www.last.fm/user/PirtePiraja) is pretty much dominated by free jazz and different kinds of avant garde.

But Sun Ra's not that little known, is he? Myself, I've just discovered Fred Anderson (http://www.last.fm/listen/artist/Fred%2BAnderson/similarartists) through Last.fm; I did not know him, even though I've been a free improvisation enthusiast for some fifteen years.

Really? It seems that every time I visit a HiFi shop to buy spare earphone pads they're playing Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler. I'm almost too polite to say that too many people have heard him (even if not of him).

Nah, just kidding. I used to like Dire Straits as a kid, back in the eighties.

Nox Arcana - The Awakening Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsoSyhJNnW4

Right now it's Probably:

Melt-Banana - Japanese noise rock, coolest guitar playing ever.

Lightning Bolt - Noise rock duo, just bass and drums, and it works well.

Pelican - Kinda heavy post rock stuff from Chicago.

Boris - Japanese band who plays all kinda of styles, as long as it's loud.

None of those are really that obscure though. I know a lot of super obscure black metal, but I don't listen to much metal these days.

I think that most of the music I listen to is pretty below the radar for most people. Then again, it's all kind of relative, isn't it? I've got a last.fm (http://www.last.fm/user/ghindo) if anybody is curious what my music tastes are like.
Venetian Snares- Amazing breakcore

Death From Above 1979.

They're pretty well known. They get a good amount of radio play (at least around here). They're very good, nonetheless.

Hard Rock

@ twitch AC/DC is NOT southern rock...lol

Guns N' Roses is hard rock/ sleaze rock (I listen to tons of hair metal and gnr are NOT hair metal)

If you are looking for bands similar to ac/dc have you checked out airbourne? very similar to ac/dc you would like them. You should try out using sites like last.fm and pandora to find similar music to artists you like. Pretty much all of my more obscure music I discovered using those.

You should also check out slash's snakepit, slash is the guitarist (obviously) it's a bit different from gnr but there are really good.

definitely man, every song is great. I love "Mr. Brownstone" "It's So Easy" and "Nightrain"

I think the Use Your illusion album is very under appreciated too. Some great stuff, coma is my absolute favorite gnr song.

I'm not really digging Chinese democracy so far though.. so far I like Shacklers revenge and chinese democracy but the others seem "meh"

Let us not descent into critiquing whether or not someone else's suggested artists fit your personal standards of being "obscure".

As far as the genre talk goes, I personally think genre's are killing music. Sad day when someone who claims to love music, dislikes(and criticizes) just as much music, if not more, than they love.

Still, back on topic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kill Paradise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSZA-gCuvR0&feature=related (Local electronic artist I met in Denver when I lived there, very passionate person with a great ear for harmonics. Fairly unknown to my knowledge. Sounds similar to hellogoodbye and Owl City)
Maloko http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SonUW_yEMWw (I believe with their latest release they are gaining more popularity, but they are nonetheless a very genre-bending band, and this is just a great song)
The Beta Band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsbR2dEmHGc (A nice chill song from a talented, albeit esoteric artist.)
The Manchester Orchestra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4orCW0rKuAo (Saw them twice live, very committed to what they are singing.)
That's someone's own fault for rejecting an entire genre of music. Genre's, in my view are a good thing. They help me find new bands when I'm looking for, and give me a general idea of what something's going to sound like before I check them out. I find most people reject genre's because they're offended because somebody corrected them (not directing that at you).
Southern Rock [...]. I don't hear any of that in AC/DC.
But they come from Down Under! That's almost as south as you can get, except for the Highway to ... where Tasmanian Devils dwell.
I wouldn't take genre talk too seriously, anyway. And I hope no one was offended by my Mark Knopfler comment.
Okay that was funny.
I mistaken Southern rock for something else I cannot place my finger on now...
Anyways AC/DC is not just Hard Rock as they have traits of something else.
Also as to the genre talk,they are important(well the ones that are real...)
I mean really look at the 80's for god sakes lol.
Some music makes about 75% of some sub cultures like Punk,Emo,Metalhead(well... 100% for metalhead lol),and many others.
My main point is music gernes ever since the 80's have made their mark on people.(or should I say with people?)
So saying omg Disturbed is Heavy Metal would be incorrect as hell and a metalhead would know this.
Or saying The Cockney Rejects is pop would be wrong and look stupid lol. As They are Punk and more or less Hardcore Punk.
Yeah, I see the point, you're right. AC/DC called themselves, or rather their genre, "Power Rock" back in the eighties, I think.
Actually the thing about genres is that when something comes up that you cannot lay your finger on, it's fun to invent a new genre, something unheard-of.
Most of my last.fm (http://www.last.fm/user/PirtePiraja) playlist/profile/favourites consist of "free jazz", and I'm very willing to accept that qualification, because it's a good one.
However, when you rip a cd (with abcde (http://lly.org/~rcw/abcde/page/) for example) you sometimes get funny genres. E.g. "newage" puzzles me: isn't "New Age" some sort of genre of yuppie religion(s)... And Led Zeppelin is often tagged as "folk" (well, yeah, it's as much "folk" as its "heavy metal").
K.M.D. - Kausing Much Damage
Since so many of the kids on here like to have neat and precise labels for everything, you can classify this as underground hip-hop. Whatever you choose to call it, these guys rocked. This is the band that incubated the legendary MF DOOM (Daniel Dumile), if you listen to hip-hop that should be a, "nuff said" moment for you right there.
Check 'em out, you won't regret it. The true brains behind these early productions was the late Subroc, also known as, "The Hip-hop Hendrix" (he was Daniel Dumile's brother.)
