Could I plug my Ipod into my computer and install ubuntu (or any version of linux really) onto it? I don't want to run linux on my ipod (i've done that before) I want to run linux on my computer off of my ipod. Is this possible? would it act as a hard drive?

In bios is your Ipod recognized as a hard drive?
If so why not.
Be careful when you get to partitioning, you want to leave the original files on their own partition and not format it.

YOu would have to boot off it like a usb hard drive.
I wouldn't recommend it though. It could kill the life of your ipod.
Kind of like the problem with putting ubuntu on a usb drive. After a while it will run out of read/write cycles and it will go kaput. I'm not sure about this, but you might want to check into it before you go further....
Plus another thing I just now thought of...
Can you get complete access to the drive on the ipod? Doesn't the software on the ipod lock the drive?
Just some thoughts...
