View Full Version : [ubuntu] What's that new thing called SCIM ?

After years of using Ubuntu 6, I finally upgraded to Ubuntu 8. Nice but... things that used to work for me smoothly now don't behave as expected (e.g. EMACS).
In my quest for a solution I discovered a suspect: SCIM.
What is SCIM and where I can learn more about it?
Most importantly: Is there a way to temporarily disable/enable it, without having to uninstall/re-install it?
Thanks,
Alex

SCIM (Smart Common Interface Method) is an interface to input complex characters like Chinese and Japanese
[Edit] It runs in the background until it is triggered by keystrokes. I have a small icon right above my trash icon. So you would need to shut it down to 'disable' it.

Thanks! Indeed, when I right-clicked it, there was a context menu that allowed to me to Exit the program.
Now, if I want to restore it, how do I run it again?

Uh, if you exited then I guess you have to go to System - Preferences - SCIM Input Method Setup
I haven't seen any other place to start it up from

To run it again: Alt + F2, then run scim -d

What do I do if I right click the tray icon and pick Exit and it refuses to exit?
Bill
Update: I uninstalled it.
