View Full Version : help with WM for gentoo

hi
I installed Gentoo with the live CD successfully. once i boot up I get a localhost login. then i login as root and try to install a windows manager but i need a internet connection but i dont know how to get my WLAN or LAN to work so i can download a WM. Please help!

It's hard to be of much help when you give no info about your wireless card.

Remember that Gentoo is a manual distro, and things aren't supposed to "just work" out of the box.

i dont need wireless for this, i can use ethernet. also I know gentoo doesnt work out of the box thats why im trying it.

I'd worry about getting your internet working before thinking about a window manager. Did you have working internet from the LiveCD? How did you set that up? Though Gentoo is a manual distro, usually wired internet "just works," unless you have a weird setup; does your local network not use DHCP? Did you modify the network settings to reflect this?

i didnt do anything to my network before this. its a unencryped WLAN. i dont know anything about DHCP either.

Don't use WLAN for the moment, just plug in your physical ethernet cable. You can worry about getting your wireless working once you're further along.

ok i tryed it with a ethernet connection but could not download anything.

Grab a copy of the minimal CD (not the graphical LiveCD), boot from it, and see if you have working internet (through your ethernet). If so, check this section (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=8#doc_chap2) of the Install Handbook (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml) for how to configure your system identically to the minimal CD. If you don't have working ethernet automatically from the minimal CD, try this section (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=3) for tips on how to get it.
