At work we have a directive from on-high to use MS Sharepoint (ugh) to build a social networking type site for our department. (I work for an IT Department at a mid-western University) The reason given is that we need to improve communication between teams. We have been told that it needs to be something "Like Facebook". My question is: Why?

I do sometimes with coworkers...but that's not really work related. It's more used to talk to them outside of office hours.

I suspect you don't mean that literally (left wing persons).

E-mail / Jabber springs to mind.

Why not project software? MS has one thats can be integrated into its office suite and I believe there is open source ones out there.
