i'm playing with slax running in ram and i think it has to be the fastest thing i've ever used. is this just because i'm running it in ram, or is slackware based stuff just that much faster? how does it compare to arch (which is what i'm currently using), regarding performance?

Slackware is about equal with Arch in terms of speed. I use them both in a dual-boot, and you really can't go wrong with either.
SLAX can provide a shortcut to installing Slackware.

I'm writing this using Slax booted from a USB stick loaded into RAM. It's really amazing - I'm really impressed with the hardware detection. It even plays Youtube videos.

Slax and Slackware are almost equal in speed. If you really like Slax then you should install Slackware it has a lot more preinstalled software.
