I was hoping someone could help me resolve this issue. When I boot Ubuntu (non-server edition on a Dell) none of the menu options are available. The entire perimeter of the desktop is blank, there is not a way to access any of the programs.

I have reinstalled much (or all) of the OS by going into the "esc" key menu and then entering recovery mode while Ubuntu boots.

The error messages generated by the recovery routine are: Hal, "sub process post-installation script returned error exit status1"; Update-notifier, "dependency problems - leaving unconfigured." These two programs would seem to do little in blocking a main functionality of the OS kernel though.

Any ideas, thoughts? Can I do a clean restore outside of recovery mode? Thank you very much.
