I have recently downloaded the iScan scanning software for an Epson Perfection V700 photo. There is no .deb file for iScan, so I have had to compile it from source. I downloaded the file and followed the instructions.

I had some errors, but I was able to resolve some of them by reading this (http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-522253.html) thread. However, I then encountered a further error not addressed in that thread. When I executed "make install" (either as sudo or normal user), I received the following output:

If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
during execution
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
during linking
- use the `-Wl,--rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
- have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'

See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.

I cannot for the life of me understand why this is going wrong. Can anybody assist?

I have now managed to install iScan and get my scanner working using the technique described here (http://www.avasys.jp/cgi-bin/lx/bbs/en/scanner-bbs/hyperbbs.cgi?mode=view;Code=5063), and the workaround described here (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/208405).
