Here is what I have done/installed to my Ubuntu box.

Live CD Install of Hardy, installed/upgraded for all CD installed apps/features.

Installed the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings manager for Compiz.

Installed Cairo-Dock.

Upgraded to Firefox 3.

Installed Screenlets.

During the time it took me to do this, every time I opened a window, it kept creeping up higher in my screen, and farther to the left.

Like this :

Kinda a silly complaint, but it does get slightly annoying. For some reason my computer isn't remembering where I had the last open window position and just shoves it nearly out of reach.

OK, too much info, but is there an easy way to alter where my windows will open when initiated?

I had the same problem recently. I solved it simple by switching off visual effects in System->Preferences->Appearance and than again managed them through Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.
Now everything looks fine again. :)
