Upgrade your web browser
We recommend that you upgrade your web browser so you can get the most out of Windows Live Hotmail. Upgrading should only take a few minutes. To get started, choose one of the browsers below:

* Microsoft Internet Explorer
* Mozilla Firefox
* Apple Safari

If you don’t want to upgrade right now you can still continue to Windows Live Hotmail, but some parts of it may not work and it may not be displayed properly.

anyone else seeing this all of a sudden...?

when i click "continue to windows live hotmail" it still seems to work fine... its just an old throwaway email for signing up to random forums and registering with other stuff that i really dont care about.

nevertheless, wtf?

It's done that for a while. I think it only likes Firefox 2 or something.

I don't have that problem, however you can try User agent switcher (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59).

I suggest using Gmail. Google is a better master than Microfail ever was ;) :lol:

Yes, it does it to me. When I go to My Space under Windows Live and then click on the Hotmail link it brings up the message. It can't be much more than a couple of weeks old and I've been using Firefox 3 (release not beta) since it occurred in the Ubuntu repos. I'll check if it makes any difference between Linux (no update) and XP (updated) and get back to you.

The only difference seems to be that you get the option for added 'features' plus what looks like targeted adverts (maybe a la google ?) Why update if it means sharing more personal info with Microsoft...

oh, i do :) gmail rocks.

my hotmail addy is for registering for random crap that requires registration but does not work with bugmenot.

i think i registered here with hotmail address. not that this is crap, but i keep my real gmail email addy to friends and family.

some low traffic forums (http://atarchive.gotdns.org:8080/UtopiaForums/boardroot) have on the fly registration, which i think is awesome... even though it makes it easy to flood and spam.

I have a Hotmail account, but I normally use Gmail, because it's much better - no stupid Microsoft check and no annoying Flash ads at the top of the page.

Here is a workaround:

Type "about:config" in the address bar and press Enter.
Search for "general.useragent.vendor" and make it empty (right-click -> edit)

(From this thread (http://forum.ubuntu-nl.org/topic/32166) in the Ubuntu NL forum).

Hrm, I think Wikipedia complains when your browser doesn't have a user agent, so that might not be the best option.

Just an FYI, it does the same thing on FF3 in Windows.

i've started using the + addresses... so, if I signed up here, use zachtib+ubuntuforums@gmail.com. That way, if the site sends me junk, it's easy to tell where it came from and filter it away.

Is a (temporary) bug when using Linux (I guess). They did some changes a few days ago and it looks like it doesn't work perfect. Not a big surprise, after all it's still Microsoft ;-p

I saw that last night. Upgrade FF? To what? I'm already at 3.0.3 Microsoft cracks me up. I deleted hotmail right after that. It's worthless unless you enjoy junk mail.

Thanks for the workaround but i don't think its a hotmail issue. I get a similar message if you use Dashboard screenlet (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Dashboard+Screenlet?content=70324). Must be something to do with Firefox.

Yuck!

I have a hotmail account, but I only use it to collect post from my web pages. From there I get about 30 spam mails to every genuine email, so I keep it separate from all my other mail. :KS

It's happened to me for about a few months (while using firefox 2 continuing onto firefox 3)

Don't upgrade your browser, update your email provider! I throught most web veterans abandoned Hotfail years ago..?

Reading this link this morning (http://linux-watch.com/news/NS6023147333.html), I came to realize that Linux/Ubuntu Firefox, Windows Firefox (including the new Minefield version), has no ability to write an email. I can reply, add/change subject, but nothing in the editor works. I've even tried the about:config changes with no luck...

Looks like I am going to dump my hotmail account(s). No use for them and can care less for MS practices and products. Hopefully everyone else that has these issues dumps hotmail also, though I know it's tough for some due to business contacts and such, but those who can should. This would reduce the revenue created for MS by less user traffic for the advertisers needs. :)

Remember the old saying?
Windows: Where do you want to go today?
LINUX: Where do you want to go TOMORROW!

PS. What a disaster it would be if MS ever bought Yahoo. I've had Yahoo email accounts for over 15 years. Never a problem.
