instal problem 8.04.164 bit

Hi I have ubuntu 8.04 32 bit on a pent 4 with 1 gig ram and everything works well Have decided to upgrade the computer to an intel core 2 duo 3 gig and 8 gig ddr2 800 ram but when i try to instal ubuntu 64 bit it comes to a halt with (initramfs) displayed can anyone please advise what to do next Thanks Wolf

Have you tried installing the i386 version of ubuntu on it?

Have you checked the disk for errors? Instead of installing go down the list to 'Check Disk for Errors'.

have tried to instal32 bit same result have installed xppro64 no probs just many drivers are not available or are problematic will try a different linux after our public holiday thanks for all the suggestions so far
