I work as the UK IT manager for a high street brand, as far removed from a tech sector as you can imagine, so no real bias there. As part of a review, I have checked the web stats for the last 12 months.

It shows a increase in Linux as a platform. Total over the year, up from 0.69% to 1.96%. Again, this isn't a tech brand, so the people coming to our site are more than likely general customers.

The number of customers using a Mac has stayed constant at 2.47%.

Just thought id share this! :D

EDIT - Sorry, title is wrong. Should be 1.96%

just proves what the general trend is, that linux is gaining users all round, hopefully next time you check the 2% barrier will be passed:-)

Too true smoker. Puts pay to the generally held view in some quarters that Linux is somehow stuck at about 0.8% market share.

Apple now has 10.6 % of the market

The next time someone says Windows has 90% of the market, show them the above figures.

Servers Tom? Desktop users all :D

The Linux figures has a lot to do with the staggering rise of the "netbook". The benefits that Linux bring to these machines is all too obvious.

Canonical is also proving to be guiding light in Desktop Linux deployment.

All in all, the future is looking very exciting from where I sit.

It's because people are getting fed up with the ridiculous prices and shite support.

This made me look at the stats for my website (paranormal research). This is just for September 2008.

All are percentages (%)

1 - Windows 74.7
1.1 - XP 51.6
1.2 - NT 0.1
1.3 - Vista 16.5
1.4 - 2003 5.1
1.5 - 2000 1.0
2 - Linux 20.2
2.1 - Ubuntu 2.1
2.2 - Fedora 0.1
2.3 - Unspecified Distro 18.3
3 - Mac OSX 3.3
4 - BSD 0.1

In January of this year, Windows was about 95%, Mac 2% and Linux 1%.

By April, Windows was 92%, Linux 5.5% and Mac 1%.

Vista has actually stayed the same or gone down by ~1%...same for XP.

I find it all very nteresting.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a lot more real world data like this to show the wider PC/games and software world!
