switching from kde to gdm

In spite of all my efforts I cannot get back to a gnome desktop. I went into console and even stopped the "KD" pid's but the K desktop returns.

KDE to GDM? That's confusing.

There's KDE versus GNOME (desktop environments)

There's KDM versus GDM (log-in managers).

What exactly are you trying to do? From either log-in manager you can start either a KDE or a GNOME session; just choose it from the menu.

To switch between log-in managers, just open Synaptic, mark one for installation and one for removal, and click Apply.
