Cannot get Ubuntu to install

I am trying to install 8.04LTS on an HP/Compaq nx6110 with a 20Gb hard drive. I have burned the iso to a CD and can get the system to boot to that drive. However, it appears as if Ubuntu wants to boot and load on my computer but when it gets to the point where the Heron background shows up my computer just sits there forever, churning away. I never get any windows allowing me to proceed with the install. Any ideas on what is going on here? I'm completely new to Ubuntu/Linux and am not really sure how to proceed.

Did you check the md5sum for the iso before you burnt it as an iso - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Did you check that the burn was ok with the check cd for defects.

Does your laptop have sufficient memory to run the livecd -
At least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the alternate install CD (384MB of RAM is required to use the live CD based installer).

I ran the check cd for defects and the md5sum - both checked out okay. My laptop has 256MB of RAM so it can technically run the live CD but I think it's really pushing it. I'm expecting another 512 of RAM in a few days so I'll probably wait till then to try again unless anyone else has any suggestions.

If it doesn't work, throw more RAM at it. Well, I got my 512MB of RAM today and installed it. Ubuntu loaded like a dream. Now I just need to figure out how to get my wifi working......
