Pidgin (obvious reasons), Rhythmbox (if I'm at my computer, I'm almost positively listening to music as I do whatever it is that I happen to be doing, Deluge 1.0 (best Linux client I have used), and Miro (gotta get them netcasts) are usually the only programs that I run in the background as I work.

While these programs run in the background Firefox, Thunderbird, GIMP, AbiWord, and GnuMeric all make appearances on my desktop fairly regularly.

I don't use Ubuntu as my main operating system, but here are the programs I do use (I use OS X as my main OS):

- Safari
- iTunes
- iChat
- Terminal
- Skype
- Yahoo! Messenger
- Xchat Aqua (even though I don't think it's been updated in two years)
- Disco
- TextMate

I think that's about it. I might have left something out.

Here is what I usually use in Ubuntu:

- Firefox
- Pidgin
- Xchat
- Thunderbird
- Terminal (normally using vim and connected to one of my servers)
