Yes;
sudo apt-get install mozilla-plugin-vlc

And install this in Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=mediaplayer&cat=all
Just run the wizard.

over mozilla-mplayer or gecko-mediaplayer? I don't know, but I do know that I am very happy with latest version(0.9) of VLC - it plays everything I have tried from www. You can watch streams from within vlc(starts vlc as standalone) or directly in Firefox.
