Help With Ubuntu Install

I am new and don't even know how to post anything yet. I need some help with respect to installing ubuntu. I downloaded the file for my computer (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition) and copied the iso file to a new cd using "Roxio" "Disk Copier" program. What I generated was a "Bin" file(BOOTCAT.BIN) and another "iso" file(ubuntu-8.04.1-desttop-i386.iso) on the CD-R.

After this I attempted to boot from the CD which failed to produce anything. I have never worked with "iso" files before and know very little about them. I am not sure how to use the files that I created on the CD. I am also not sure if I processed the "iso" file correctly. I checked the internet to find out how to use "iso" files and had very little luck.

Initially, my short term objective is to run Linux from a CD. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Not too sure about roxio - but whatever you do you need to burn the downloaded as an iso or image - if you're not usre how to do so with it use infrarecorder (http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/) to burn the file.

The completed iso burn should have folders on it - not a file.iso

Not sure what version of Roxio you are using but this is how I got my Ubuntu 8.0.4 CD made.

I downloaded the iso file and checked the md5.
I then opened "Roxio Creator Plus - Dell Edition" and
selected File -> New Project -> Copy -> Burn Image
which changed the right panel to let me browse and select the ubuntu-8.0.4.1-desktop-i386.iso file.
I then checked the lower left to see that the image fit on the CD and then clicked the red burn "Burn Image".
If everything works it will tell you it is done and eject the CD.

You can also try ImgBurn:

Once you install; go to Mode>ISO>Burn
Select 1x for speed of burn. Do not use CD-RW
