Hi!
I want to change Gnome with some thing else. Will you please give me a list of top 5 desktop environments and links to sites that give info about them?
Thanx!

There is only one, and that is XFCE.

You can have a look at http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Desktops
There is a description on different desktop environments and window managers.

Technically Openbox, Fluxbox, ... are Window Managers and not Desktop Environments. LXDE is another one.

Nepherte makes a good point. As far as modern, common DEs go, Gnome, KDE, Xfce, and LXDE, are the big ones. UDE and EDE are outdated to say the least. There is also Backbone (which is based on GNUstep), or GNUstep itself if you would classify it as such.

Things like the *box family are window managers, not full desktop environments. The DE vs WM debate is often cause for a holy war, so I won't go into preferences, but as you can see from the links already provided, there are lots of options.

icewm is a nice windows manager. In fact, it works just great on an ancient PII with Ubuntu.

Technically, E17 doesn't fit into either of those boxes being expressed here (Desktop Evironment and Window Manager). Its more like on Windows, as they classify themselves as a "desktop shell". I think it is great, though others don't like it because it can be unstable.

For DE's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_X_Window_System_desktop_environments

For WM's, I use xmonad and used to use wmii: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmonad

I'm assuming the OP would be welcome to non-DE's and use things like pure WM's
In which case,
1: LXDE
2: Fluxbox
3: IceWM
4: wmaker
5: vtwm

Really, Fluxbox, IceWM, and E17 really blur the line between WM and DE.

Openbox, FVWM, Window Maker, wmii, xmonad, and awesome are just WM.

I'd say the top 5 (non-Gnome/KDE)WM/DE based soley on my percieved popularity of each is:

1. Fluxbox
2. XFCE
3. Openbox
4. IceWM
5. JWM
