Can anyone give me step by step instructions for installing LAME so I can convert my own recordings to mp3 please? I read some web stuff but never detailed enough.
Yes I am a newbie! Running 6.06 due to other issues.

Thanks for any help.

Open a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and type

sudo apt-get install lame

I have tried that even after selecting all available repositories.
Terminal responds with:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package lame is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package lame has no installation candidate

I have downloaded the .tar.gz and extracted to a folder but the readme said to compile it. How do I do that?

Thanks for your help.
