View Full Version : [ubuntu] Installed Ubuntu 8.04, unable to access XP

Hi,

I currently have my laptop dual booted. First I installed Windows XP sp2, followed by ubuntu 7.04 (only version I had at the time) and upgraded it to 8.04. I didn't notice until after I upgraded to the current version that XP wasn't added to the GRUB. Since the boot that XP uses is different from Ubuntu, I'm pretty sure that I cannot use Repair from the XP disk to fix my problem.

I don't know how to fix this issue, I've seen forum responses like http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-435429.html but they address the issue that grub is lost after installing a windows platform.

my menu.lst file:

# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
# grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
# and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.

## default num
# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.

# You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default entry
# is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.
# WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not change this entry to 'saved' or your
# array will desync and will not let you boot your system.

### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

As you can see, my windows xp isn't listed.

Urban, please post the output from each of the following commands and someone should be able to help you.

sudo fdisk -l
sudo blkid
Please indicate which of the partitions listed by the fdisk command is the one where your XP is installed.

Cheers, Pat.

sudo fdisk -l output:

Partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary.

Disk /dev/sdb: 508 MB, 508559360 bytes

sudo blkid output:

/dev/sda3: TYPE="ntfs" UUID="0A382BAE382B9829"
/dev/sdb1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" UUID="EEC7-5C58" TYPE="vfat"
/dev/sda1 is my swap
/dev/sda2 is ubuntu
/dev/sda3 is my xp partition

I installed xp before ubuntu, however xp is the third partition because i previously had windows vista installed which took two partitions.

Thanks Urban. Now back up and edit your grub menu:

sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.bk1
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Insert the following before the line "### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST":

title Microsoft Windows XP
root (hd0,2)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1
Then try booting into Windows from your grub menu.

Sorry but I'm not sure this will work and I cannot pretest as I'm not using dual boot myself. Please post any grub errors if you get them. I'm suggesting this only because no one else has replied.

Let us know how you go.

Cheers, Pat.
