You could use the vanilla Linux kernel from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/
Learn how to compile your own Linux kernel, then build all your app from source.
You could do this from any Linux distro, some distro's are completely source based. Other distro's have their own patched kernels and apps as pre-made binaries to download quickly, like Ubuntu.
If you're really interested in this, then Linux From Scratch, Slackware, or Gentoo might be what you want to look into.
