I have an old windows 98 laptop I want to put linux on but i don't have a cdrom drive in the laptop. I have an external cdrw drive that i can plug into the pcmcia port but there is not any way to get the computer to boot from this drive. Is there any way I can install xubuntu from the alternate cd without first booting from it?

Do you have access to another laptop with a working CD drive? You can swap the hard disks, install, and swap them back. :)

ps There are some common issues that come up with old laptops, so do yourself a favor and search for threads on your specific laptop to see if others have had success. Post your system specs here if you like.
