in 7.10 there was a screens selection under system-->administration where you could select from a list what type of monitor you had. my monitor is automatically set to 800x600 (those are not the exact numbers) resolution and it won't go any higher. normally i could go and select the kind of monitor i had or one that had higher resolution capabilities and set it to that. my main problem is that some windows don't fit completely on the screen so if there are any forward or ok buttons i can't click on them. is there another way to do this or am i screwd?

Seems to have moved to System > Preferences > Screen resolution

or alt-f2 type in gnome-display-properties and click run

Hope this helps

PS: if you have one of the nvidia cards and drivers install you can replace gnome-display-properties with gksudo nvidia-settings in the above tip
