trying to install ubuntu and

it starts off with a "username and password" prompt. i did not select one. so i dont know what to put in there.

some background:

i downloaded the 8.04.1 version for desktop from the ubuntu website. burned it to disk, then commenced to install it using the top selection (boot from cd). once booted it is on a page where it is requesting me to type in a user name and password.

any ideas to what is the user name and password?

username is up to you and the password too
it will use in terminal for superuser privelege if you want to install or update your programs..
also it will be use in login prompt just like in windows xp if you activate the password for the account
