Terminal not working, no text?

I am just starting out on ubuntu, and want to install Irssi, and need the command prompt. When I open it, I get a window, but no place to type in. For an image, please go here : http://www.oosah.com/actions/view/image.php?size_id=1&image_id=829341

a terminal window does not need to be the size of the screen. As there is normally on a few characters on a single line at the bottom on the window it could be that the command prompt is below the bottom of the screen.
