View Full Version : [all variants] True RAID and alternate CD's question

September 22nd, 2008, 12:29 AM
I'd like to set up a desktop 64bit kubuntu installation with RAID1 (mirroring), and I have some questions:

1st - with a true RAID PCIe card do I still need the alternate CD needed in FAKEraid? Or is the ubuntu/kubuntu 64bit live install CD enough?

2nd - if one disk fails, can I simply connect the other one (as slave) to another ubuntu/kubuntu machine and simply copy the data in my home directory?
(this would be a must even if I eventually had to give up the OS in the disk

3rd - would you advise to have a spare disk in the RAID set so in case of one of the original two disks fails the system automatically start using this third disk? Or should I use only 2 disks?

4th - i've read somewhere that, in RAID1, it's better to use true RAID than software RAID because requires less bus and cpu overload. Is that true?

Thanks in advance!
