View Full Version : [xubuntu] Installing Xubuntu (file help)

Hey, I don't have Xubuntu installed yet, but I just dual booted to take a look at it.

Should I choose to install Xubuntu over top of my Windows XP professional, what will happen to all my files and programs?

For instance, I have a wireless internet connection through my other computer, what will happen to the client that I have installed that lets me connect to that?

I would really appreciate if someone could walk me through the transition so that I can keep most of my files intact (I have some image files and music backed up on CD-ROMs, but none of my programs).

Get Gparted Live CD and 'shrink' your XP partition. Then install, go Manual and use the free space. I would get wired to the Internet for the installation.

Burn the iso to disk and boot from it.

Once partitioned, and I have both installed on my computer, can I access those files through xubuntu? And maybe eventually get rid of XP. I don't have much room on my computer to really have both...

Ubuntu comes with that ability built in.

When you said 'I would get wired to the Internet for the installation.', I was wondering about that.
How small should I make my XP partition? I actually have only about 7gigs of free space on my harddrive, so would I shrink the parition as much as possible?

and eventually, can I get rid of the XP partition?

You caqn do both. Shrink XP as much as possible and finally get rid of it if you so wish. As for 'wired'; I've seen some installations getting stuck looking for a wireless driver. Of course having DHCP is best.

Thanks, this is really helping me a lot.

For the Gparted Live, how does that work? I downloaded the .zip file, but nothing happened when I click on the exe after unpacking it. Well, a window popped up for a second, but disappeared so fast I didn't see anything.

Also, could Wubi be an option here?

Use ImgBurn:

Once installed; go to Mode>ISO>Burn
Select 1x as the speed of burn
