Hey. My girlfriend is thinking of buying a laptop and I was just wanting to know peoples experiences with Ubuntu on their laptops? Can anyone recommend a good laptop that works well with Ubuntu? And ones that don't?

Cheers

If you want the easy life, buy a laptop with Ubuntu already installed. I got mine from Dell, and very nice it is too.

I've gotten two Dell Vostros (1500 and 1510) that I've been able to get working pretty good with Ubuntu (although I didn't get them preloaded).

You are not the first one who asks this question; try searching the forums and you'll find some of the previous topics about the same question.

Find a laptop that you like and make a list of the hardware components. Then do a search on the forums for those hardware components to find out if there are specific components that could give you trouble.

Some general hints: Intel and nVidia graphics generally work better than ATI graphics (because the drivers are better). Intel WiFi cards should usually work without problems (but there are some people complaining about the Intel 3945 WiFi cards giving them trouble on Dell machines). No-name WiFi cards might use chips from Broadcom, which are not well supported on Linux.

Another vote for Dell. I bought two with Ubuntu pre-loaded on them and have been very happy with them.

Yea... If you buy it preloaded from a manufacture like dell its probably a good bet that Ubuntu works great on it :p

The Asus F9E-2P045C and the F9E-2P211C work very nicely with Ubuntu.

Except that you probably won't get the best deal from dell. If $100-200 matters to you then go to newegg & hunt under the top sellers list.
