I have a Raedon HD3850 graphics card installed. Have downloaded current ATI catalyst and driver and installed both. When I have attempted to use the Catalyst program to run my monitor at a vertical refresh rate above 60Hz I get a "white screen of death". I have a feeling the program does not like my monitor - the card works fine in XP with refresh rate to 85Mz. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. Thanks

You might want to take a look at this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=872460&highlight=HD3850) and the link in it.
Also this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=869186&highlight=HD3850), which is long, does provide and discuss the Ubuntu way of installing the ATI driver.

Hi phidia
Thanks for the quick reply. I am new to this sort of forum thing and am finding my way around. I will have a good look at the threads you suggested and play around with the info.
My monitor is an old one so that could be the problem so I will borrow a mates new LCD and see if that improves the situation.
Once again thanks for the input.

The driver may be misinstalled. Try this guide,Method 2:

Here was my solution for the ATI Radeon HD3450. I still have some tweaking but it is finally working good.

Thanks to both 73ckn797 and markbuntu for the help- I have printed out the info from the links. Dismal weather outside, hope the atmosphere is less threatening when wrestling with my ATI problem.
