You have to burn the ubuntu ISO as an image not just copy it to the disk.

This is exactly right! I had a horrible time burning images in Windows until I found this:

If I have to use windows to burn an iso image I use ImageBurn.

To learn how to burn an iso file to cd see BurningIsoHowto (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto). Also look at the videos Infra_Recorder (http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Infra_Recorder) and Ubuntu_ISO (http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Downloading_and_Burning_an_Ubuntu_ISO).

Don't forget to choose "boot first from cd" in your bios settings.

okay i burned the image rather than the data using imgburn. i resarted the cpu with the cd in, pressed f11 to get to the boot order menu, selected cd-rom, and it still goes right into windows, no differance in start up.
