I have a single harddrive and i've never installed an operating system. I have a very low understanding of partitioning and i could use some help.

Use the Vista partitioner and allocate space for Ubuntu. Get an iso from here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
(I'd advise the Desktop version)
Burn a CD following this guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
Install Ubuntu in the allocated space. (Go Manual)

I imagine you'll find it in 'Computer'>'Administration of Hard Drives' or something like that. You are the Vista user.
