I'm trying to boot up Ubuntu in Live CD mode on a computer in order to get an idea for how it's hardware will work under Linux. Whenever I put the disc in and tell it to load the live version, it spends a minute loading and then goes to a screen with hundreds of errors scrolling by very quickly. What I can make out from this is "SquashFS error" and something about "sb_bread cannot write to <some hex address>".

What could be causing this? I ran a partial memtest (to about 40%, I only have a limited time to work on this computer) thinking it could be some memory issue but it didn't find anything.
