Install aMSN, the MSN Messenger for Linux.

Get it from GetDeb at http://www.getdeb.net/

Check out Emesene (http://emesene.org/) it's a nice alternative to Windows Live Messenger. You can also try Pidgin which is installed by default in Ubuntu (Applications>Internet>Pidgin).

If I were you, I would install VirtualBox and run a virtualized Windows XP with the applications you need, and to which there are no Linux-compatible alternatives for.

I would go with anars suggestion. WINE has it rated as garbage (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=2231).

Is this true? no alternatives at all? I have been looking and found RVP plugin for Pidgin but I am unable to get it to work :(
