Currently I'm using a Geforce 8800 gts card with dual screen (twin view, so I can drag-n-drop between the screens) configuration. My monitor runs at 1280x1024 and my projector at 1280x720.

Now I'm thinking of buying a Radeon HD 4870. but I really need to know if there are any problems with this kind of setup on that card.

Please note that I don't want to use clone mode or one desktop that stretches both the screens. I want two separate screens with different resolutions that I can drag windows between.

Anyone having experience of this with the new ATI cards?

I'm already using a Radeon RV350, and I'm not sure I have the option to do this . . . I've been trying to get it set up, but to no avail.
Apparently this is an issue not many people have experience in.

ATI released the linux drivers for the 48xx cards at the same time they released the cards. Unfortunately, most resellers declined to include the driver in their packaging. Nonetheless, you can get the driver and install it following the directions here, Method 2:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide

The driver in the Hardy repository is not the latest one and does not support the 48xx series cards. The latest driver from ati is 8.9, released today:
