I knew what it "meant" from the context, but I couldn't find it in any of my books and though it was from Marathi (that is the state language in the state they are in) but I found it on a site about Mumbai slang.

We have a lady dog (looks like something between a rotweiler and a german dog). She is not intimidated by cats, although all she wants to most of the cats she encounters is just to play with them friendly.

And I know in english for animals I should use it, not he or she.

I have seen this also in movies from other countries (eg Philippines). Even I do not understand why.

Although I have been in a situation where they were many romanians and french people, and even I know (some:)) french, we used also english, but in whole phrases, not an english word in a french phrase, when what french I know whasn't enough to get along.
