I was thinking of trying Wine out with some old windows software that now won't work with Vista. However, I was told that it would make my system more open to attacks from Viruses and Malware.

I'm on an "always on" broadband connection, but I would have thought that if I wasn't trying to use Wine for stuff like a web browser or e-mail client, I'd be OK.

Can anyone help please?

A lot of viruses do not work in WINE, but some do, but without drastic effect (some will only reduce performance) but you can kill wine and that will solve that.

If windows malware does manage to run in your wine installation, it will only affect anything you have installed in wine. Your Ubuntu installation will be fine.
