(curious) why linux keeps rerererereformatting swap?

Every time I install a GNU/Linux based OS (Linux distro) it keeps reformatting my swap partition and most of them (distros) refuse to install if I tell it not to format the swap. They format swap even if I don't plan on using it or if it is on an externally plugged disk...

So why is that?
