Mic wont record sound?

as the name suggests. I double clicked on my speaker icon for sounds. Edit->Prefrences, then checked on Capture 0, 1,2.

go to sound recorder then nothing

what am i doing wrong? is a mic something that you can just pug and play on ubuntu?

after fooling around, i got it to record my voice, but it sounds like i am across the rooom, and i get al lthis extra static. any suggestions?
